Adjust Your Wardrobe for Fall

Share |

After attending Lee Heyward of the Charleston Style Concierge’s Feminar at Mary Mojo in Mt. Pleasant, I am feeling more optimistic about transitioning my closet from summer to fall—a change that since my school days has triggered a feeling of loss as I bid farewell to breezy sundresses, madras minis, and inimitable summer nights. This year, however, I will not be packing away my favorite white pants with sorrow because, as Lee pointed out “our mother's fashion rules no longer apply.” Pants, jackets, and dresses need not be banished because they bare white or summery tones; instead, they just require a bit of reworking to carry over into fall and even winter. Adding tights and boots, and layering with a long sleeve shirt can transform your favorite summer wrap dress into a fall staple. Throwing on a scarf and layering with a wool knit vest or cardigan balances out summer hues, making them perfectly suitable attire for cooler seasons. Perhaps most valuable was Lee's rule of thumb for wearing those infamously banned white pieces after Labor Day: She advised her eager students to judge the wearability of a garment by its fabrics weight, not its color. So, if your white jacket is made of breezy linen pack it away, but if it's a denim that will actually offer some warmth in the cooler months keep wearing it!

Thanks Lee-Can't wait for your next event!
